state fair

While Don's mom was visiting, we went "into the city" and attended the State Fair of Texas. We're big fair goers. We love the festivals, the craft displays, the competitions, the shows, the people watching, and yes, the food. But without one of those things, it's not really as much fun. Unfortunately for Texas, this state fair was missing a lot of the fun. Lots and lots of rides, and lots of funny fried food, like deep fried butter and deep fried peaches and cream, but not much substance. Is that wierd to say about fair food? It was just all kinda...blah.

When we first got there, the kids spent a few minutes playing in the dirt and picking up sticks.


We moved on from there and went to an Old Mill and the kids played in the dirt, picked up sticks, and ran around. Then we went to the fountain, where the kids ran around, played in water and goofed off. At this point, I'm thinking we could have just saved some money and went to a local park. =)


Exhausted from all of this playing around, we spent five million dollars on tickets for food. I thought the tickets were really pretty. But next year, I move that they use ugly tickets and charge less money. LOL


We had some yummy food,



the kids chose a crazy drink that made me think about college kids at Spring Break,




and we saw the famous Fried Butter that brought Oprah to Texas.


It took us about 45 minutes to get to this point, which I had been dreaming about my whole life.



Sadly, Big Tex is smaller in real life than he is on tv.



Then we went to see a dog show. That lasted about 5 minutes. No joke.


Don took the kids around to the carnival area, while his mom and I took Pocket to see the craft exhibits.


They were able to sit in a Bumblebee car, which really excited The Little Master.




So that was that. We probably won't be going back very often, but now we can say that we've been. At least, Don had gotten the tickets free from work! I suggest that if you want to spend a lot of money on tickets, food, and entertainment, head on down to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It's gobs more fun and they do amazing charitable work with the funds they raise.
