And on day 4 of our little Summer Camp, we read the children’s version of The Wizard of Oz. On our road trip this summer, we're visiting a town that L. Frank Baum, the author of WOZ, lived in for a few years. The city has a FREE ten-acre park, which features a farmstead area with Dorothy's house, children's petting zoo, Munchkin Land (plaza area with running stream), Scarecrow's house, Tin Man's house, Wicked Witch Castle, and Emerald City. How fun is that? We wanted the kids to understand the theme and thought this was a great way to introduce it to them. The city next to us has a children’s theater group that performed the musical this weekend, so we also took them to that. Good times! And to top that off…we got the movie free! The kids have been earning $3 gift cards at Half Price Books each week as part of their summer reading program. When we went this week, they had it on VHS for only $3.

The park also has statues and games dedicated to other famous storybooks, so I think the kids will really love that, too. My favorite is going to be the giant shoe that has a slide that goes down it from the nursery rhyme about the woman who lived in a shoe. That's too funny! And it's all free, except for the carousel and hot air balloon ride. Super fabulous!
Where exactly is this land of Oz? It sounds fun.

ReplyDeleteMy kids would totally LOVE that...they are obsessed with Wizard of Oz and often quote lines from it:) I love passing on my favorite childhood loves to them...it's like I can enjoy them all over again through them:) Looks like fun Sarah...you find the coolest things and places!

ReplyDeleteI did show them the movie - after they read the kiddie book and saw the play - and they LOVE it now. I swear to you that just two months ago, it did fuh-reak them out. Now, they love it.
